Your calendar is full, your energy is stretched, and your goals keep getting pushed to “someday” but someday is not a strategy. I’m flying solo for this one and speaking directly to the part of you that knows you’re meant to build something of your own, even if you don’t come from an entrepreneurial family and even if you’re still working a traditional job.
I break down what the entrepreneur life actually looks like: the fast months, the constant pivots, and the mental fight with procrastination and fear. I share how my military and medical background shaped my discipline, teamwork, and discernment, and why those traits matter when you’re trying to start a small business, form the foundation, and learn business basics. We also get real about early mistakes like jumping into opportunities without the right timing or experience and the hidden cost of trying to do it all without a mentor.
We talk legacy building in plain terms. Your job might be someone else’s dream and someone else’s legacy, and there’s nothing wrong with a career, but you can’t forget your own goals. I offer practical next steps: find a mentor in the industry you’re aiming for, journal your journey so you can retrace your progress, and create safe space to refocus on the days you feel drained. Everything you want sits on the other side of your comfort zone, and it’s time to execute without hesitation.
If this hits home, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs the push, and leave a review so more future entrepreneurs can find us.
Welcome to another episode of Pops and Sun Conversations. And it is Pops, aka your favorite Silfox, Rob Malloy. Look, I'm flying solo as uh we get towards the end of August. And um I gave my son the day off. He's been working real hard holding things down uh while I've been making some moves, doing some traveling, things like that. So we're gonna jump right in. I do have a couple of things that I want to recap um because August has been a heck of a month. And uh it's been one of those months where you see things on the calendar, but as they swiftly and quickly approach, it's like, man, okay, two days, I gotta catch this flight, get back, gotta handle this and that.
So the life of an entrepreneur, and that's actually what I want to talk about with you guys. But first, let me uh also say I want to thank you guys so much for your support. Pops the sun conversations, of course, Rob Malloy, Javen. Uh we've been rocking this thing almost two years, guys. And so uh it has been an amazing journey. So your support is always appreciated. We uh appreciate your uh messages, the emails, checking the website out. You know, all that stuff goes a long way. And that being said, I wanted to talk about entrepreneurship, and uh, you know, it's near and dear to me to talk about entrepreneurship because, you know, I have a military background. I've also worked in the corporate sector uh for, I don't know, maybe close to a decade. But the fulfillment of being an entrepreneur and actually creating something for yourself, something for your family name, uh legacy, something that you literally have built from the ground up uh is a wonderful feeling. You know, um I don't come from a family of entrepreneurship. You know, um my uh my parents are hardworking, uh they laid a strong foundation uh about work ethic and consistency and discipline. And I think that really kind of paved the way for me uh when I decided in in 2012 to explore entrepreneurship. So just a little bit of background for those of you, the guys that that don't know, uh U.S. Air Force veteran. I was a medic, guys. I was in the medic um industry. You know, we did everything from working in labor and delivery, the operating room. You know, people always ask me, did I jump out of planes? And and uh I will never tell you. I'll never tell you. But just know that you know, my career in the Air Force was was definitely a strong foundation. It allowed me to really understand what teamwork and commitment is all about. Uh, one of the ultimate sacrifices. And so, you know, uh my career in the Air Force, the medical sector of it, uh, the camaraderie with other airmen, and even working with other armed service members, you know, really laid a strong uh foundation for how I work now. And, you know, the individuals that I do meet my discernment. And uh, you know, it's been nothing less than fantastic. So yeah, so military guy got out the military, stayed in the medical field for a little bit longer, uh, jumped into the entrepreneurship somewhere around you know 2010,
2011. I would say officially 2012, when I kind of found my way in entrepreneurship. Um, you know, I I tried the the real estate thing back then, but the timing wasn't right. I didn't have any experience. And, you know, really one of the things that cost me so much was not having a mentor and just trying to figure things out on your own. Um, and that's something that I've learned even to today, to this day, the importance of it mentorship. So let me kind of get into some highlights because if I talk about my career, this episode will go into the rest of 2026. But I do want to talk about stepping into entrepreneurship, guys. It's it's uh definitely not for the weak at heart. It's you know, it's it's one of those opportunities to where once you truly embrace it, I promise you it'll be one of the best gifts that you have ever experienced. You know, uh it's not a job. You know, when you when you find your your niche and you start doing things that you actually know and and want to grow and develop with, then entrepreneurship really can uh accelerate not only your confidence, but you know, but your personal goals and and and development there. So for me, uh I I had to learn about business, putting a business together, uh making it official, making sure that I have the elements together so that you know when it's time to actually do some transactions, I'm good to go. And I would encourage anyone, even if you're currently working, uh, whatever that that career is, look at starting your own business. Now, that can be a home-based business. You can just start adding uh products and services and you know, with with your uh maybe with your degrees, maybe with some trades, maybe something that you're you're learning now and you're becoming certified, but do not be scared to start a business. You know, people talk about small business and self-employed and all that. Just get started. I promise you, if you just get started, start laying down that fan foundation, then you know you'll definitely start understanding a little bit about the importance of building a legacy. You don't have to have all the skills, you don't have to have all the answers, but you do have to have the start. You have to have the start. And that's one of the most important things. I think we get caught up in procrastination sometimes, and you know, people are in our ear telling us, hey, that's not gonna work. Why don't you do this and why don't you do that? But, you know, you have to do this thing for you. You have to do things, uh, have to do this thing for you. You know, a lot of people also have, you know, family businesses, you know, or they have you know family traditions, or they have, you know, just kind of different industries and careers. You know, your family may have been in law enforcement, or uh they may have been in, you know, entertainment of as such, you know, whatever the case is, you're gonna have to find what you can truly embrace to get the full fulfillment. And uh, you know, that's kind of what changed my life is learning more than just um trying to figure out what products or services people need. And that kind of led to where I'm at now, to be honest. You know, just learning about team building, uh, learning about embracing my personal journey. And when it came down to it, there was also some things that was deep down inside of me that it took me, you know, some trial and error, took some years, some experiences. You know, uh, I don't call anything failure because if you're still here, then it's a lesson and it's uh experience that you have to embrace. And, you know, it's uh been one of those journeys that I love because I get to share it with my family, uh, my friends. You know, you always have those guys uh back at home, your hometown who you grew up with, maybe somebody that you went to college with or the military. And they they don't understand who you have transformed or evolved to be, but they have to respect it because it's personal growth and development. And I strongly feel that that's where entrepreneurship really, really can um add some layers to what you have going on. You get to really build uh your your strengths, you get to work on your weaknesses, uh, you you get to kind of figure out what you can do better, um, what can you add to what you have going on, and then how can you hone and craft your current skills? And I think that's beautiful, uh, to have the opportunity to do that, you know, in this lifetime, because look, you only have one life to live, you know, and what do you want that to look like? Do you want to live a life to where, you know, people, opinions, uh, the naysayers, you know, those that are in your ear? Do you want that to mold your future? Uh, do you want to be in a situation where you're thinking about, well, what if I did this? What if I took that risk? What if I wasn't fearful? What if I what if I didn't worry about what the outcome was going to be? Why don't I focus on what I can control, which is getting started? And I promise you, just those simple principles will really change your life. It's changed mine. Um, I've been able to, you know, write several books. Um, I've been able to work in philanthropy and work with veterans, veteran family members, uh, you know, different community leaders, community outreach ministries. It's been, you know, quite a ride. And uh, these are things that I never thought I would be able to do. And
uh, to be completely honest with you guys, um, if I stayed at the job I was working at, the only thing I would have done was stay at that job and hope I got a raise uh next year or next quarter, and and uh just just hope that at some point you know I can reach some of my personal goals and my business goals. But at that job, and what you also have to understand is that job is somebody's dream. That job is somebody's legacy, and you're helping them build it. Now, I'm not saying don't have a professional career. What I'm saying is don't forget about your dreams and your goals. A lot of times, your career can be a stepping stone. It can give you the knowledge that you need. Um, education can give you the foundation that you need, and uh it can also put you in position to have different relationships and you know, meet different associates to where it'll make your journey uh a lot more fulfilling because now you can actually find your tribe, you can actually find those that believe in you because I promise you, you're gonna think that there's certain family members and friends that's gonna have you back in the road of entrepreneurship or the road of small uh business. And there's gonna be some disappointments. People aren't gonna support you like they like you think they would have. Uh, some people are gonna think that, you know, now that you've started this journey that you're too good for uh, you know, your old friends, and you know, people are gonna look at you to where like, oh, okay, well, what does this person think he's doing? Well, what does she think she's doing? The audacity of it all, right? So uh, you know, wrapping this thing up, uh, I wanted this episode to really be more about you. Uh, more about those fearful thoughts that we need to get uh rid of out of your head, uh that procrastination that you know definitely sticks around if you don't do anything about it. And you got to really truly take action. You know, you want to find uh a mentor, you want to find someone that is is operating in the industry or at least creating certain things that you know you want to do. Um that way uh they have a path of success that they can guide you, uh, give you some of the tools and resources, and then you can actually embrace that journey. And uh and I look forward to hearing more stories about people starting their businesses uh or having
their dream careers where they're able to expand uh what they're doing from uh an amazing standpoint of maybe not even believing that you can do anything but work a job uh or not work a job. You know, and so these are things that you definitely want to journal. Uh you want to journal your journey. Uh you want to be able to have retraceable steps in case you you know you need a refresher. Because I tell you, you're gonna be hungry, uh, you're gonna be excited, and then uh there's gonna be days where you don't do anything. You will not want to get out of bed. I mean, but that's with life anyway, right? Do you feel that way sometimes when you don't want to go to work or when you had a long summer or a long weekend, you don't want to go to work, right? You don't want to clock in. Uh, you need a mental break. So that's just what what life is about. It's about creating those safe spaces to where you can just feel like, you know what? Today is is one of those days I need some me time, I need to rejuvenate, I need to refocus, uh, I need to reboot. And I'm gonna tell you, if you are an entrepreneur, if you're a small business owner, if you're someone that is following your vision and your dreams, you're gonna really, really appreciate the results. You gotta appreciate that what you're building is for you, is for the legacy, is for your last name. And and uh for me, that's what it's been about. Uh Pops and Son is just one of the dreams that has been executed. So there's so many things to come. You know, um success after divorce has been an amazing brand. The Rob Malloy brand has been fantastic, Bob Nitro Fitness, just all these things that are part and make up who I am as a whole, um, I've been able to, you know, uh share, you know, share these moments, uh share these seasons uh with you guys. And and uh I personally appreciate and want to thank you so much for the support. And uh as I finish up this episode, you know, I want you to be encouraged to step out of the box. Uh everything that you're looking for is in and uh deserve, it's on the other side of your comfort zone. So whether that's writing a book, uh, whether that is starting a new business, uh uh a school real estate, uh just just whatever is on your heart and whatever God has placed in your spirit,
it's time to execute that without hesitation. All right, and so look, whatever I can do to help and assist, you can always reach out to me. I am Rob Malloy, everything. Uh, big shout out to my reInvent 40 community that uh is thriving. And again, Pops and Sun conversations. I'm signing out. This is your favorite silver fox, wishing you the best, and I'll see you guys next episode. September, let's get it.
